„ARTEMISIA’s SCHWERT“ erzählt vom WUNDER des künstlerischen SCHAFFENS-AKTES und der LIEBE zur KUNST, die Flügel verleihen können und manchmal sogar Gewalt und Hass überwinden.
Im Mittelpunkt stehen zwei Frauen. Obwohl ihre Leben 500 Jahre und mehrere Länder auseinander liegen, haben sie Entscheidendes gemeinsam.
Die Barock-Malerin Artemisia Gentileschi, geboren 1593 in Italien, gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Malerinnen einer Epoche, in der sie als Frau kaum Chancen hatte, als Künstlerin anerkannt zu werden, obwohl ihre Bilder mit denen des berühmten Caravaggio Schritt halten können.
Mit 17 wurde sie von ihrem Lehrer Agostino Tassi vergewaltigt. Sie zeigte ihn an, was eine ungeheuerliche Seltenheit war, und sie gewann den Prozess. Erst im Jahr 2011 wurde ihr Werk in Florenz zum ersten Mal öffentlich gewürdigt.
Boika ist eine 16-jährige Bulgarin von heute, deren Leidenschaft der Tanz ist und die von Schleppern entführt und in Deutschland zur Prostitution gezwungen wurde. Ihre Figur ist fiktiv und steht für die Millionen junger Frauen, die zum Opfer des drittgrößten Geschäftszweigs des 21. Jahrhunderts werden: Dem Menschenhandel.
Beiden gemeinsam ist die ermutigende Fähigkeit, die Gewalt, die ihnen widerfahren ist, zu überwinden und in schöpferische Kreativität zu wandeln.
Die Geschichten beider Frauen entfalten sich in einer Kombination aus moderner Opern-Musik, Theater, Choreographie und wunderschön inszenierten Filmsequenzen aus Rom und Mannheim. Eingewoben in das erzählerische Geschehen, erwarten den Zuschauer Artemisia Gentileschi’s aussergewöhnliche Werke, videoanimiert zu Musik und Choreographie.

This multi-media event combines music theater, dance and film and presents the theme of modern day slavery, known as trafficking, in a new way.
It interweaves the stories of two totally different women who succeeded in overcoming their respective trauma and in transforming it through their creative gifts.
Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653), is the first woman Baroque painter considered to be on a level with Caravaggio. At the age of 17 she was raped by her art teacher. She brings him to trial and wins the case. This was unheard of in Italy in those times: a woman who had been violated had no chance of having a respectable place in society.
She surmounts her trauma through her painting and becomes the first woman to be accepted into the Art Acdemy in Florence.
Her paintings are the basis for the extravagantly colored video projections in the theater piece.
Boika is a ficitonal young woman from modern day Bulgaria whose love of ballet sustains and quickens her.
At the age of 16 she is lured by false promises to Germany where she is forced into prostitution.
Boika unltimately finds a way to escape and return to the dance..
We first experience Artemisia and Boika as young girls, watch them grow into women and share their passion for artistic expression and the love of life. We also suffer the violence they endure and are shocked by the callousness of their abuse.
It happened then and it happens today...everywhere!
But not just that – we take home with us the thought that a victim is never only a victim but is a human being with all that the word means: the capacity to love, to laugh, to suffer, to have feelings and to have the ability to get back on one's feet and dance again..for a life without violence.
Carola Cribari, a native New Yorker, came to Germany as an opera singer. She is Professor of Music History, Voice and Piano at Pepperdine University,(Heidelberg Campus). As a composer
and founder of the Musik Theater Heidelberg, she has consistently presented works that connect music with socio-political and historic themes.
Her most recent work emerged when she discovered Artemisia Gentileschi, whose paintings and fate moved her. An article in the New York Times about Nicholas Kristof's and Sheryl Wu Dunn's book concerning the world-wide abuse of women, shocked and inspired her to take action by creating a music theater production based on the difficult theme.
Thus the idea took form. The lives of 17th century painter, Artemisia and the fictional Boika from modern Bulgaria, became the focus of this multi-media production. We watch and bear witness to the possibility, the hope, that in the end, it is „ beauty that will save us“.
A set ensemble of singers, dancers, actors, professional, „aspiring“ professionals both young and old, experienced, inexperienced, different nationalities and languages.
Professionals in music,stage direction, choreography, acting and film lead the production.
All improvise together according to the script by Carola Cribariand adapted by Ken Ludden.
All work together to bring shape and content to the piece.
